Why Treaty Video

Posted on November 9, 2021

Shot this summer, the Kitselas’ Why Treaty video captures some powerful reasons why we are pursuing a Treaty. We have been engaged in the Treaty process since 1993, and countless people have devoted their lives to supporting our people through this process of settling the land question and working towards self-governance.

In the video, we hear from Elders Mel Bevan and Isabelle McKee who recount why they believe the Treaty will benefit the Kitselas people: for the children and grandchildren who will gain the resources and autonomy to make decisions that will best represent our interests. Also featuring world-renowned artist Stan Bevan, Chief Councillor Bennett, Tsimshian Chief Treaty Negotiator Gerald Wesley, and Kitselas Treaty negotiators Dr. David Try and CJ Bennett-Nabess, we look at how the Indian Act is holding back our people and community from opportunity. We hope you love this video as much as we loved making it, and a heartfelt thank you to everyone who took the time to be part of this project!
